In 1976 Tom began doing the accounting and tax work for Russ and Lucille Dowdall, owners of The Big Red Q Quickprint Shop in downtown Aurora. After a few years, Russ and Lucille decided they did not want to continue their daily commute from Minooka. In July 1979, Tom purchased the assets of the shop and opened Aurora Fastprint, still in downtown Aurora. The shop began with two people and two presses (one for black ink and one for color ink). Tom got to do everything from press operation, to bindery, to customer service, to cleaning. The days were long, but the satisfaction of seeing customers very happy with their printed materials made it all worth it. Many of today’s customers started using Aurora Fastprint in the 1980s. It is gratifying to know that the business still has some of the same happy customers.
After 28 years of working every part of the printing business, Tom decided it was time to work less and take more time off. His daughter, Kim, joined him in 2001 and took over many of the responsibilities. In 2006, she became owner and president of the growing business. Now Tom spends more time enjoying his hobbies of golf, sailing and scuba diving. He feels he will always want to come to work, only a little less frequently.
